A fascinating program presenting the history of the Klondike Gold Rush through the perspective of a gardener. Discusses the history of gardening in Skagway as a tool for viewing the development of Skagway from a gold rush boomtown into a civilized community and highlights how the growth of gardening parallels the growth of community.

This workshop will introduce planning and organization ideas for building and improving home gardens and landscapes as well as discussing order of progression, tips for helping maintain gardens in the future, and drainage

Jewell will focus on teaching the in’s and out’s of organic weed control through an informative slideshow presentation. Additionally, participants will be lead on a tour of the gardens highlighting methods and procedures that have been integrated in the design and upkeep of this Skagway treasure.
Ed Buyarski - Fruit Trees and Berries
Will discuss the variety of beautiful and tasty plants that can be integrated into both small and large landscapes so that everyone can enjoy eating fresh treats and having an abundance of fruit for jams, jellies and pies from right outside their door.

Expanding on the basic Teaming With Microbes talk, Jeff takes the mystery out of composting by revealing the compost food web through soil analysis. In addition to some fascinating science, learn why compost works and the easiest ways to make it, including designer composts for particular plants. The Skagway School has generously allowed the use of their microscopes to give participants the opportunity to view soils and compost tea up close and personal.
